MARINE AND OPERATIONAL CHALLENGES FOR LNG SUPPLY CHAINS

The LNG supply chain demands global oversight in order to ensure safety, efficiency, economy, and sustainability. In recent years, the mushroom growth of LNG solutions including LNG bunkering, FSU’s, FSRU’s, FSRU’S, terminals, containerization, and regasification, compounded with an increase in the number of LNG vessels has put a huge strain on the existing experienced human capital required to serve this industry.

Experience level in the LNG industry has stretched thin while training opportunities and institutions are scarce and organizations like IMO have raised concerns about the need for measures to address this widening gap. To ensure that the LNG supply chain is well looked after and suitably supervised in totality, there is a need neigh demand for oversight from an experienced and proven marine and operational unit with a proven record in the industry.

While an owner may provide a basic unit e.g., an LNG vessel, converted to FSU or FSRU for a business need, the marine and operational oversight from the charterer’s perspective of such an asset is a must to ensure safety and sustainability. This not only ensures smooth operations but guarantees the charterer, peace of mind. While remedies are available to charterers for lack of performance, obviously, consequential and reputational losses cannot be redeemed! Hence a unit, providing marine and operational oversight for the supply chain from the charterer’s perspective is a must. At a very basic level, we ensure that the following elements are amply covered;

  • Statutory continual compliance and implementation
  • Regulatory continual compliance and implementation
  • Competency of staff and implementation
  • Safety of operations continual oversight
  • Compliance with industry standards for commercial acceptance
  • Bench Marking against industry standards
  • Commercial oversight ensures performance
  • Operational oversight to ensure deliverance of goals and objectives
  • Cost control oversight from operations to consumables
  • Global Optimization
  • Adhesion to industry demands e.g. emissions.

In summary, the requirement for an effective marine and operational unit to oversee and ensure charterers’ interests cannot be overly emphasized.
